Theory of Sets, II, 127

Let (Xι)ι∈I(\mathrm{X}_\iota)_{\iota \in \mathbf{I}} be a family of sets. Show that if (Yι)ι∈I(\mathrm{Y}_\iota)_{\iota \in \mathbf{I}} is a family of sets such that Yι⊂Xι\mathrm{Y}_\iota \subset \mathrm{X}_\iota for each ι∈I\iota \in \mathrm{I}, then

∏ι∈IYι=⋂ι∈Iprι−1(Yι).\prod_{\iota \in \mathrm{I}} \mathrm{Y}_\iota = \bigcap_{\iota \in \mathrm{I}} \overset{-1}{\mathrm{pr}_\iota}(\mathrm{Y}_\iota).
Solution

This solution was written by nemotron-3-ultra-free and judged by a machine. It is not Bourbaki's and it has not been checked by a person.

Let (Xι)ι∈I(\mathrm{X}_\iota)_{\iota \in \mathrm{I}} be a family of sets and let (Yι)ι∈I(\mathrm{Y}_\iota)_{\iota \in \mathrm{I}} be a family of sets such that Yι⊂Xι\mathrm{Y}_\iota \subset \mathrm{X}_\iota for each ι∈I\iota \in \mathrm{I}.

By Definition 1 of §3 (tag 03Q8), the product ∏ι∈IXι\prod_{\iota \in \mathrm{I}} \mathrm{X}_\iota is the set of all functional graphs FF with domain I\mathrm{I} such that F(ι)∈XιF(\iota) \in \mathrm{X}_\iota for every ι∈I\iota \in \mathrm{I}. For each α∈I\alpha \in \mathrm{I}, the projection prα\mathrm{pr}_\alpha is defined in the same Definition 1 as the mapping of ∏ι∈IXι\prod_{\iota \in \mathrm{I}} \mathrm{X}_\iota into Xα\mathrm{X}_\alpha that sends FF to F(α)F(\alpha).

For a fixed ι∈I\iota \in \mathrm{I}, the inverse image prι−1(Yι)\mathrm{pr}_\iota^{-1}(\mathrm{Y}_\iota) is therefore

prι−1(Yι)={ F∈∏ι∈IXι∣F(ι)∈Yι }. \mathrm{pr}_\iota^{-1}(\mathrm{Y}_\iota) = \{\, F \in \prod_{\iota \in \mathrm{I}} \mathrm{X}_\iota \mid F(\iota) \in \mathrm{Y}_\iota \,\}.
Taking the intersection over all ι∈I\iota \in \mathrm{I} gives
⋂ι∈Iprι−1(Yι)={ F∈∏ι∈IXι∣∀ι∈I,  F(ι)∈Yι }. \bigcap_{\iota \in \mathrm{I}} \mathrm{pr}_\iota^{-1}(\mathrm{Y}_\iota) = \{\, F \in \prod_{\iota \in \mathrm{I}} \mathrm{X}_\iota \mid \forall \iota \in \mathrm{I},\; F(\iota) \in \mathrm{Y}_\iota \,\}.

On the other hand, the product ∏ι∈IYι\prod_{\iota \in \mathrm{I}} \mathrm{Y}_\iota is, by the same Definition 1, the set of all functional graphs FF with domain I\mathrm{I} such that F(ι)∈YιF(\iota) \in \mathrm{Y}_\iota for every ι∈I\iota \in \mathrm{I}. Because Yι⊂Xι\mathrm{Y}_\iota \subset \mathrm{X}_\iota for all ι\iota, Corollary 3 of Proposition 6 (tag 03QD) implies ∏ι∈IYι⊂∏ι∈IXι\prod_{\iota \in \mathrm{I}} \mathrm{Y}_\iota \subset \prod_{\iota \in \mathrm{I}} \mathrm{X}_\iota. Hence an element of ∏ι∈IYι\prod_{\iota \in \mathrm{I}} \mathrm{Y}_\iota is exactly a functional graph FF with domain I\mathrm{I} that belongs to ∏ι∈IXι\prod_{\iota \in \mathrm{I}} \mathrm{X}_\iota and satisfies F(ι)∈YιF(\iota) \in \mathrm{Y}_\iota for all ι∈I\iota \in \mathrm{I}.

Therefore the two sets are equal:

∏ι∈IYι=⋂ι∈Iprι−1(Yι). \prod_{\iota \in \mathrm{I}} \mathrm{Y}_\iota = \bigcap_{\iota \in \mathrm{I}} \overset{-1}{\mathrm{pr}_\iota}(\mathrm{Y}_\iota).
