Theory of Sets, chapter III, § 1. Order relations. Ordered sets

Let E be an ordered set. An element a∈Ea \in E is said to be the least (resp. greatest) element of E if for all x∈Ex \in E we have a⩽xa \leqslant x (resp. x⩽ax \leqslant a).

An ordered set need not have a greatest element nor a least element. If E has a least element aa, then aa is the greatest element with respect to the opposite ordering.

¶ If E has a least element aa, then aa is the unique minimal element of E; for if x∈Ex \in E is distinct from aa, we have a<xa < x.

Examples

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
