Theory of Sets, chapter III, § 1. Order relations. Ordered sets

A lattice is obviously both left and right directed. But an ordered set which is both left and right directed is not necessarily a lattice. \* An example of the latter is the set of mappings x↦p(x)x\mapsto p(x) of R\mathbf{R} into itself, where pp is a polynomial in R[X]\mathbf{R}[X], this set being ordered by the relation p⩽qp\leqslant q (no. 4). \*

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
