Theory of Sets, III, 237

Let qn, kq_{n,\,k} be the number of strictly increasing mappings uu of [1,k][1, k] into [1,n][1, n] such that for each even (resp. odd) xx, u(x)u(x) is even (resp. odd). Show that qn, k=qn−1, k−1+qn−2, kq_{n,\,k} = q_{n-1,\,k-1} + q_{n-2,\,k} and deduce that

qn, k=([n+k2]k).q_{n,\,k} = \left(\begin{matrix}\left[\dfrac{n+k}{2}\right]\\ k\end{matrix}\right).
