Integration, chapter IX, § 1. Premeasures and measures on a topological space

— Let TT be a topological space, LL a compact subset of TT, and λ\lambda a positive measure on LL. There exists a unique positive measure μ\mu on TT such that, for every function f∈F+(T)f \in \mathscr{F}_+(T),

(2)

μ∙(f)=λ∙(fL). \mu^\bullet(f) = \lambda^\bullet(f_L).

Let us set p(f)=λ∙(fL)p(f) = \lambda^\bullet(f_L) for every f∈F+(T)f \in \mathscr{F}_+(T), and let us show that the conditions 1) and 2) of Prop. 2 b) are satisfied. The second is obviously satisfied: indeed, p(f)=p(fφK)p(f) = p(f \varphi_K) if KK contains LL. If K⊂TK \subset T is compact, and if h∈F+(K)h \in \mathscr{F}_+(K), then

pK(h)=p(h0)=λ∙(h0∣L). p_K(h) = p(h^0) = \lambda^\bullet(h^0|L).

But h0∣Lh^0|L is the extension by 0 of hK∩Lh_{K \cap L} to LL: the last expression is therefore equal to (μK)∙(h)(\mu_K)^\bullet(h), where μK\mu_K is the image of λ∣K∩L\lambda|K \cap L under the injection of K∩LK \cap L into KK (Ch. V, §6, No. 2, Prop. 2 and §7, No. 1, Prop. 1), and pK=(μK)∙p_K = (\mu_K)^\bullet. Condition 1) of Prop. 2 b) is therefore also satisfied, and the existence of μ\mu follows at once.

Q.E.D.

We shall say that μ\mu is the measure on T defined by λ\lambda. In particular, for every point xx of T one can define the measure εx\varepsilon_x; it is characterized by (εx)∗(f)=f(x)(\varepsilon_x)^*(f) = f(x) for f∈F+(T)f \in \mathscr{F}_+(T).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
