Exercise 7, § 8

Commutative Algebra, VI, 463

Let KK be a field, vv a valuation on KK, AA the ring of vv and mm the ideal of vv. Suppose that AA is Henselian; let LL be a finite extension of KK of degree nn; let v′v' be the unique valuation on LL extending vv (Exercise 6 (e)), A′A' its ring and m′m' its ideal. Let xx be any element of A′A'; show that the degree over A/mA/m of the class xˉ\bar{x} of xx in A′/m′A'/m' is a divisor of nn and that the order of the class of v′(x)v'(x) in Γv′/Γv\Gamma_{v'}/\Gamma_v is a divisor of nn (consider the minimal polynomial of xx over KK).
