Let AA be a Krull domain and M,NM, N two finitely generated lattices in a vector space VV of finite rank nn over the field of fractions of AA. For all c≠0c \neq 0 in AA such that cN⊂McN \subset M, consider the determinantal ideals dk(M/cN)d_k(M/cN) (Exercise 10) and write:

dk(N,M)=div⁡(dk(M/cN))−(n−k)div⁡(c). d_k(N, M) = \operatorname{div}(d_k(M/cN)) - (n - k) \operatorname{div}(c).
(a) Show that dk(N,M)d_k(N, M) does not depend on the choice of cc such that cN⊂McN \subset M; dk(N,M)d_k(N, M) is called the determinantal divisor of index kk of NN with respect to MM. (b) dk(N,M)≥dk+1(N,M)d_k(N, M) \geq d_{k+1}(N, M) and dn(N,M)=0d_n(N, M) = 0. Show that, if we write
ek(N,M)=dn−k(N,M)−dn−k+1(N,M), e_k(N, M) = d_{n-k}(N, M) - d_{n-k+1}(N, M),
then
ek(N,M)≤ek+1(N,M) e_k(N, M) \leq e_{k+1}(N, M)
for 1≤k≤n1 \leq k \leq n; the divisors ek(N,M)e_k(N, M) are called the invariant factors of NN with respect to MM (reduce it to the case where AA is a principal ideal domain). (c) Show that d0(N,M)=χ(M,N)d_0(N, M) = \chi(M, N) (no. 5 ). (d) If MM is a lattice in VV but NN is a lattice in a subspace WW of VV of rank q<nq < n, the invariant factors of NN with respect to M∩WM \cap W are called the invariant factors of NN with respect to MM. Show how Exercises 8 to 10 and 14 to 16 of Algebra, Chapter VII, § 4 may be extended (assuming if need be in certain cases that AA is an integrally closed Noetherian domain).
