Topological Vector Spaces, V, p. 78

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let EE be a hilbertian space, GG a subgroup of the group of all automorphisms of the hilbertian space structure of EE. Let EGE^G be the closed vector subspace of EE consisting of all vectors invariant under GG, and pp the orthoprojector from EE onto EGE^G. a) Show that the orthogonal complement of EGE^G in EE is the closed vector subspace generated by the vectors s.x−xs.x - x, where ss ranges over GG and x∈Ex \in E. b) Let HH be a non-empty closed convex subset of EE which is stable under GG. Show that the projection of 0 onto HH belongs to EGE^G. c) Suppose that HH is the closed convex envelope of the orbit of a point xx of EE, and let aa be the projection of 0 onto HH. Show that a=p(x)a = p(x) and that H∩EGH \cap E^G reduces to the point aa (« Birkhoff-Alaoglu th. »). (Observe that x−ax - a is contained in the orthogonal complement of EGE^G.) d) Suppose GG is generated by an automorphism uu of EE. Show that p(x)=lim⁡n→∞1n+1∑j=0nuj(x)p(x) = \lim_{n \to \infty} \frac{1}{n+1} \sum_{j=0}^n u^j(x) for all x∈Ex \in E (if yn=1n+1∑j=0nuj(x)y_n = \frac{1}{n+1} \sum_{j=0}^n u^j(x), note that the sequence (yn)(y_n) has a weak limit point aa, and that u(a)=au(a) = a, then use cc). e) Suppose GG is the image of a homomorphism t↦utt \mapsto u_t from R\mathbf{R} onto the group of automorphisms of EE, such that for all x∈Ex \in E, t↦ut⋅xt \mapsto u_t \cdot x is a continuous mapping from R\mathbf{R} into EE. Show that p(x)=lim⁡T→∞1T∫0Tut⋅x dtp(x) = \lim_{T \to \infty} \frac{1}{T} \int_0^T u_t \cdot x \, dt for all x∈Ex \in E.

f) Suppose that there exists an element x≠0x \neq 0 of E and a number α\alpha such that 0<α<10 < \alpha < 1 and ∥s.x−x∥≤α∥x∥\| s.x - x \| \leq \alpha \| x \| for all s∈Gs \in G. Show that EG≠{0}E^G \neq \{0\} (use c)).
