Exercise 12, § 4

Functions of a Real Variable, I, 47

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let ff be a continuous real function on an open interval I⊂RI \subset \mathbf{R}; suppose that for every pair (a,b)(a, b) of points of II such that a<ba < b the graph of ff lies either entirely above or entirely below the segment MaMbM_aM_b on the interval [a,b][a, b]. Show that ff is convex on all of II or concave on all II (if in ]a,b[]a, b[ there is a point cc such that McM_c lies strictly above the segment MaMbM_aM_b show that for every x∈Ix \in I such that x>ax > a the graph of ff lies above the segment MaMxM_aM_x on the interval [a,x][a, x]).
