Integration, IV, p. 128

Let XX be the interval [0,1][0, 1] in R\mathbf{R}, and FF the Hilbert space having an orthonormal basis (et)0⩽t⩽1(e_t)_{0 \leqslant t \leqslant 1} equipotent to XX.

a) Show that the mapping ff of XX into FF, such that f(t)=etf(t) = e_t for 0⩽t⩽10 \leqslant t \leqslant 1, is not measurable for Lebesgue measure, but that the inverse image under ff of every closed ball in FF is measurable and, for every continuous linear form a′a' on FF, ⟨f,a′⟩\langle f, a' \rangle is negligible.

b) Let HH be a non-measurable set in XX (§ 4, Exer. 8); show that if g=fφHg = f \varphi_H then the function ⟨g,a′⟩\langle g, a' \rangle is negligible for every continuous linear form a′a' on FF, but the numerical function ∣g∣|g| is not measurable.
