Suppose that is a field. Let be an indeterminate and ; has canonically a valuation (order of the formal power series) which makes it a complete valued field.
(a) Let be a finite-dimensional vector space over . Then has canonically a complete metrizable topological vector space structure (Topological Vector Spaces, Chapter I, § 2, no. 3, Theorem 2). Let be a family of elements of such that for less than some rational integer. Then the series converges in and every element of can be expressed uniquely in this way. (Take a basis of .)
(b) The vector space has a canonical complete metrizable topological vector space structure. Every endomorphism of can be expressed uniquely in the form , where and the are zero for less than some rational integer.
(c) If is of characteristic 0 and , we write
If is such that , then .
(d) If is another finite-dimensional vector space over and , then .
(e) Deduce from (c) and (d) that, if has a (not necessarily associative) algebra structure and is a derivation of , then is an automorphism of the algebra .
