(a) Suppose that 2 is invertible in KK. Let aa be a Lie algebra over KK. On the KK-module a′=a×aa' = a \times a we define a bracket by the formula:

[(x1,x2),(y1,y2)]=([x1,y1]+[x2,y2],[x1,y2]+[x2,y1]). [(x_1, x_2), (y_1, y_2)] = ([x_1, y_1] + [x_2, y_2], [x_1, y_2] + [x_2, y_1]).
Then a′a' is a Lie KK-algebra and the mappings x↦12(x,x)x \mapsto \frac{1}{2}(x, x), x↦12(x,−x)x \mapsto \frac{1}{2}(x, -x) are isomorphisms of aa onto ideals b,cb, c of a′a' of which a′a' is the direct sum. (Consider the quadratic extension K′K' of KK with basis 1 and kk where k2=1k^2 = 1. Form a(K1)a_{(K_1)} and then restrict the ring of scalars to KK. Then observe that 12(1+k)\frac{1}{2}(1 + k), 12(1−k)\frac{1}{2}(1 - k) are idempotents of K′K' and that (1+k)(1−k)=0(1 + k)(1 - k) = 0.)

(b) Let aa be a real Lie algebra, g=a(C)g = a_{(\mathbf{C})} and bb the real Lie algebra derived from gg by restricting the field of scalars to R\mathbf{R}. Show that b(C)b_{(\mathbf{C})} is isomorphic to a(C)′a'_{(\mathbf{C})}, where a′a' is the algebra introduced in (a). (Consider V=C⊗RCV = \mathbf{C} \otimes_{\mathbf{R}} \mathbf{C} as a vector space over C\mathbf{C} by (z⊗z′)z′′=z⊗z′z′′(z \otimes z')z'' = z \otimes z'z''. Observe that VV is the complexification of the real vector subspace of VV generated by 1⊗11 \otimes 1 and i⊗ii \otimes i and that this subspace is identified with the quadratic extension of R\mathbf{R} with basis 1 and kk where k2=1k^2 = 1.)
