Exercise 23, § 1

Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, IV

We retain the notation of Exerc. 16. Let Aut(A)\mathrm{Aut}(A) be the group of automorphisms of the apartment AA. Show that if φ∈Aut(A)\varphi \in \mathrm{Aut}(A), then φ\varphi permutes the walls of AA, and φtφ−1∈T\varphi t \varphi^{-1} \in T for all t∈Tt \in T (use Exerc. 18). Deduce that WW (identified with a subgroup of Aut(A)\mathrm{Aut}(A)) is normal and that Aut(A)\mathrm{Aut}(A) is the semi-direct product of the subgroup EE of automorphisms preserving the chamber CC by WW. Show that the action of Aut(A)\mathrm{Aut}(A) on WW defines an isomorphism from EE to the group of automorphisms of the Coxeter system (W,S)(W, S), or to that of the Coxeter graph of (W,S)(W, S) (cf. also Exerc. 19).
