Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, V

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let H be the subset of Rn\mathbf{R}^n consisting of the points x=(x0,…,xn−1)x = (x_0, \ldots, x_{n-1}) for which the form

B(x)=−x02+x12+⋯+xn−12 B(x) = -x_0^2 + x_1^2 + \cdots + x_{n-1}^2

is < 0, and let PH\mathbf{P}H be the image of H in the projective space Pn−1(R)\mathbf{P}_{n-1}(\mathbf{R}). Let G be the orthogonal group of the form B.

a) Show that PH\mathbf{P}H is a homogeneous space of G, that the stabiliser of a point is compact, and that G acts properly on PH\mathbf{P}H.

b) Let ω\omega and Ω\Omega be the differential forms on H defined by the formulas

ω=∑i=0n−1(−1)ixidx0∧⋯∧dxi−1∧dxi+1∧⋯∧dxn−1 \omega = \sum_{i=0}^{n-1} (-1)^i x_i dx_0 \wedge \cdots \wedge dx_{i-1} \wedge dx_{i+1} \wedge \cdots \wedge dx_{n-1}
Ω=ω(−B(x))n/2. \Omega = \frac{\omega}{(-B(x))^{n/2}}.

Show that Ω\Omega is the inverse image under the canonical projection π:H→PH\pi : H \to \mathbf{P}H of a differential form Ω~\tilde{\Omega} on PH\mathbf{P}H. Show that the positive measure ν\nu associated to Ω~\tilde{\Omega} (Differentiable Varieties R, 2nd part) is invariant under G, and that it is the only such measure, up to a scalar factor.

c) Let C be an open simplicial cone with vertex 0 in Rn\mathbf{R}^n (§ 1, no. 6). Assume that C is contained in H, and denote by PC\mathbf{P}C the image of C under π:H→PH\pi : H \to \mathbf{P}H. Show that, if n≥3n \geq 3, then ν(PC)<∞\nu(\mathbf{P}C) < \infty (identify PH\mathbf{P}H with the subspace of Rn−1\mathbf{R}^{n-1} consisting of the (x1,…,xn−1)(x_1, \ldots, x_{n-1}) such that ∑i=1n−1xi2<1\sum_{i=1}^{n-1} x_i^2 < 1, and determine the measure corresponding to ν\nu on this subspace). Show that PC\mathbf{P}C is relatively compact in PH\mathbf{P}H if and only if C‾\overline{C} is contained in H.
