Exercise 12, § 4

Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, V

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Assume that the form x.y=BM(x,y)x.y = B_M(x, y) is non-degenerate and that W is infinite. Identify E with its dual E∗E^* by means of BMB_M; in particular, denote by (es∗)(e_s^*) the basis of E dual to the basis (es)(e_s), and by C the interior of the simplicial cone C‾\overline{C} generated by the es∗e_s^*. Let G be the orthogonal group of BMB_M, and let μ\mu be a Haar measure on G; the group G is unimodular and contains W.

a) Show that, if ν(W∖G)<∞\nu(W \setminus G) < \infty (where ν\nu is a non-zero positive measure invariant under G), the form BMB_M is of signature (n−1,1)(n-1, 1), with

n=dim⁡(E)=Card(S), n = \dim(E) = \mathrm{Card}(S),

and that x.x<0x.x < 0 for all x∈Cx \in C.

(Let x∈Cx \in C be such that x.x≠0x.x \neq 0, and let LxL_x be the hyperplane orthogonal to xx. Show, by using Exerc. 10, that the restriction of BMB_M to LxL_x is either positive or negative; show that the second case implies that BMB_M is of signature (1,n−1)(1, n-1) and that this is impossible. Deduce that x.x≤0x.x \leq 0 for all x∈Cx \in C, and hence x.x<0x.x < 0 since C is open.)

b) Conversely, assume that BMB_M is of signature (n−1,1)(n-1,1) and x.x<0x.x < 0 for all x∈Cx \in C (in which case WW, or (W,S)(W,S), or the corresponding Coxeter graph, is said to be of hyperbolic type). Let HH be the set of x∈Ex \in E such that x.x<0x.x < 0, and let H+H_+ be the connected component of HH containing CC. Show that HH is the disjoint union of H+H_+ and H−=−H+H_- = -H_+, and that H−H_- is contained in the simplicial cone generated by (es)s∈S(e_s)_{s \in S} (use the fact that H−H_- is the polar of H+H_+). Show that H+H_+ and H−H_- are stable under WW.

c) Retain the notation and assumptions of bb. Let ff be the linear form on EE defined by f(es)=1f(e_s) = 1 for all s∈Ss \in S. If x∈Hx \in H, put φ(x)=f(x)2/(x.x)\varphi(x) = f(x)^2/(x.x). If PH\mathbf{PH} denotes the image of the cone HH in the projective space P(E)\mathbf{P}(E), the function φ\varphi defines a function φ~\tilde{\varphi} on PH\mathbf{PH}. Show that the map

φ~:PH→]−∞,0] \tilde{\varphi} : \mathbf{PH} \to ]-\infty, 0]

is proper. Deduce that, for all x∈H+x \in H_+, the functions w↦φ(w.x)w \mapsto \varphi(w.x) and w↦f(w.x)w \mapsto f(w.x) attain their maximum for a value w1∈Ww_1 \in W (use the fact that GG acts properly on PH\mathbf{PH}, cf. Exerc. 11, and that WW is discrete in GG); show that these properties are equivalent to w1(x)∈C‾w_1(x) \in \overline{C}. Deduce that C‾∩H+\overline{C} \cap H_+ is a fundamental domain for the action of WW in H+H_+, and that the image of this fundamental domain in PH\mathbf{PH} has finite measure for the invariant measure ν\nu on PH\mathbf{PH} (use Exerc. 11). Conclude that ν(W∖G)<∞\nu(W \setminus G) < \infty. Show that W∖GW \setminus G is compact if and only if C‾\overline{C} is contained in H+H_+, i.e. if es∗.es∗<0e_s^*.e_s^* < 0 for all s∈Ss \in S (in which case WW, or (W,S)(W,S), or the corresponding Coxeter graph, is said to be of compact hyperbolic type).
