Exercise 16, § 1

Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, VI

Let RR be a root system. BB a basis of RR, and R+R_+ the set of positive roots relative to this basis. For w∈W(R)w \in W(R), put Fw=R+∩w(−R+)F_w = R_+ \cap w(-R_+). Show that the map w↦Fww \mapsto F_w is a bijection from W(R)W(R) to the set of subsets FF of R+R_+ such that FF and R+−FR_+ - F are closed. (Apply Cor. 1 of Prop. 20 to the subset P=(R+−F)∪(−F)P = (R_+ - F) \cup (-F).)
