Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, VIII, 228

a) Let g\mathfrak{g} be a Lie algebra and nn an integer ≥0\geq 0. Let Σn(g)\Sigma_n(\mathfrak{g}) be the subset of gn\mathfrak{g}^n consisting of the families (x1,...,xn)(x_1, . . . , x_n) that generate g\mathfrak{g} as a kk-algebra. Show that Σn(g)\Sigma_n(\mathfrak{g}) is open in gn\mathfrak{g}^n in the Zariski topology (Chap. VII, App. I). If k′k' is an extension of kk, then Σn(g(k′))∩gn=Σn(g)\Sigma_n(\mathfrak{g}_{(k')})\cap \mathfrak{g}^n=\Sigma_n(\mathfrak{g}). Deduce that, if g(k′)\mathfrak{g}_{(k')} can be generated by nn elements, so can g\mathfrak{g}.

b) Let (g,h)(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{h}) be a split semi-simple Lie algebra. Let xx be an element of h\mathfrak{h} such that α(x)≠0\alpha (x)\not= 0 for all α∈R\alpha \in R and α(x)≠β(x)\alpha (x)\not=\beta (x) for any pair of distinct elements α,β∈R\alpha , \beta \in R. For all α∈R\alpha \in R, let yαy_{\alpha} be a non-zero element of gα\mathfrak{g}^{\alpha}, and let y=∑α∈Ryαy=\sum_{\alpha\in R}y_{\alpha}. Show that, for all α∈R\alpha \in R, there exists a polynomial Pα(T)∈k[T]P_{\alpha}(T)\in k[T], without constant term, such that yα=Pαy_{\alpha}= P_{\alpha}(ad xx).y.y. Deduce that g\mathfrak{g} is generated by {x,y}\{x, y\}.

c) Show, by means of a) and b), that every semi-simple Lie algebra can be generated by two elements.
