Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, VIII, 241

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

The notations are those of no. 7. For any integer m≥1m\geq 1, denote by Ψm\Psi^m the endomorphism of Z[Δ]\mathbf{Z}[\Delta ] that takes eλe^{\lambda} to emλe^{m\lambda}. We have Ψ1=\Psi^1= Id and Ψm∘Ψn=Ψmn\Psi^m\circ \Psi^n=\Psi^{mn}.

Let E be a finite dimensional Δ\Delta-graded vector space. For all n≥0n\geq 0, denote by anEa_nE (resp. snEs_nE) the nnth exterior (resp. symmetric) power of E, equipped with its natural grading.

a) Show that

nn ch(snEs_nE) =∑m=1nΨm=\sum_{m=1}^n\Psi^m(ch(E))ch(sn−mEs_{n-m}E)

and

nn ch(anEa_nE) =∑m=1n(−1)m−1Ψm=\sum_{m=1}^n(-1)^{m-1}\Psi^m(ch(E))ch(an−mEa_{n-m}E).

Deduce that ch(snEs_nE) and ch(anEa_nE) can be expressed as polynomials, with rational coefficients, in the Ψm\Psi^m(ch(E)), 1≤m≤n1\leq m\leq n. For example:

ch(s2Es_2E) =12=\frac{1}{2} ch(E)2+12Ψ2^2+\frac{1}{2}\Psi^2(ch(E))

ch(a2Ea_2E) =12=\frac{1}{2} ch(E)2−12Ψ2^2-\frac{1}{2}\Psi^2(ch(E)).

b) Prove the following identities (in the algebra of formal power series in a variable T, with coefficients in Q[Δ]\mathbf{Q}[\Delta ])::

∑n=0∞\sum_{n=0}^{\infty} ch(snEs_nE)Tn=T^n= exp{∑m=1∞Ψm\{\sum_{m=1}^{\infty}\Psi^m(ch(E))Tm/m}^m/m\}

and

∑n=0∞\sum_{n=0}^{\infty} ch(anEa_nE)Tn=T^n= exp{∑m=1∞(−1)m−1Ψm\{\sum_{m=1}^{\infty}(-1)^{m-1}\Psi^m(ch(E))Tm/m}^m/m\}.

c) Assume that Δ\Delta is a group, so that Ψm\Psi^m can be defined for all m∈Zm\in \mathbf{Z}. Show that, if E∗E^* is the graded dual of E,

ch(E∗E^*) =Ψ−1=\Psi^{-1}(ch(E)).

d) Identify R(g)R(\mathfrak{g}), by means of ch, with a subring of Z[P]\mathbf{Z}[P]. Show that R(g)R(\mathfrak{g}) is stable under the Ψm,m∈Z\Psi^m,m\in \mathbf{Z}, and that so is the subring RΓ(g)R_{\Gamma}(\mathfrak{g}) defined in the preceding exercise.
