General Topology, IX, 268

Let XX be a Hausdorff topological space on which there is defined an associative law of composition written multiplicatively. Generalize Definition 1 to the case of a family (xi)i∈I(x_i)_{i \in I} of elements of XX, whose index set II is linearly ordered. For each finite subset JJ of II, let pJp_J denote the product ∏i∈Jxi\prod_{i \in J} x_i of the sequence (xi)i∈J(x_i)_{i \in J}.

If XX is a complete topological group, then a family (xi)i∈I(x_i)_{i \in I} of points of XX is multipliable if and only if, given any neighbourhood VV of the identity element ee of XX, there exists a finite subset J0J_0 of II such that, for every finite subset JJ of II containing J0J_0, we have pJ(pJ0)−1∈Vp_J(p_{J_0})^{-1} \in V [or (pJ0)−1pJ∈V(p_{J_0})^{-1} p_J \in V].
