Bourbaki

Exercise 2, Appendix 0

General Topology, IX, 268

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

In a linearly ordered set II, we shall say that a non-empty subset JJ is a slice of II if, whenever α\alpha and β\beta are elements of JJ such that α<β\alpha < \beta, then [α,β]⊂J[\alpha, \beta] \subset J.

a) Let (xi)i∈J(x_i)_{i \in J} be a multipliable family in a complete group GG. Show that, for every slice JJ of II, the family (xi)i∈J(x_i)_{i \in J} is multipliable (consider first the particular case in which the set of lower bounds of JJ which do not belong to JJ is empty).

b) A partition (Jλ)λ∈L(J_\lambda)_{\lambda \in L} of II is said to be an ordered partition if LL is a linearly ordered set and if the relations λ<μ,α∈Jλ,β∈Jμ\lambda < \mu, \alpha \in J_\lambda, \beta \in J_\mu imply α<β\alpha < \beta; the JλJ_\lambda are then slices of II. If (xi)i∈I(x_i)_{i \in I} is a multipliable family in a complete group GG, show that if we put pλ=∏i∈Jλxip_\lambda = \prod_{i \in J_\lambda} x_i, then the family (Pλ)λ∈L(P_\lambda)_{\lambda \in L} is multipliable and has the same product as the family (xi)i∈I(x_i)_{i \in I}.

c) Conversely, if (Jλ)λ∈L(J_\lambda)_{\lambda \in L} is a finite ordered partition of II, and if (xi)i∈I(x_i)_{i \in I} is such that each of the families (xi)i∈Jλ(x_i)_{i \in J_\lambda} is multipliable, then the family (xi)i∈I(x_i)_{i \in I} is multipliable.
