Exercise 9, § 1

General Topology, IX

a) Let XX be a topological space, let T\mathscr{T} be its topology and let (fi)i∈I(f_i)_{i \in I} be a family of mappings of XX into K=[0,1]K = [0, 1] which are continuous in the topology T\mathscr{T}. Let T0\mathscr{T}_0 be the coarsest topology on XX for which all the fif_i are continuous. Show that T0=T\mathscr{T}_0 = \mathscr{T} provided that the family of sets fi‾([0,a[)\overline{f_i}([0, a[), where i∈Ii \in I and a∈]0,1[a \in ]0, 1[, is a subbase of T\mathscr{T} (Chapter I, § 2, no. 3). The space XX is then uniformizable, and if it is Hausdorff it is homeomorphic to a subspace of the cube KIK^I.

b) Suppose that the family (fi)(f_i) is the family of all continuous mappings of XX into KK (with respect to T\mathscr{T}). Show that, if YY is any compact space, every mapping of XX into YY which is continuous with respect to T\mathscr{T} is continuous with respect to T0\mathscr{T}_0 (embed YY in a cube). The topology T\mathscr{T} is uniformizable if and only if T0=T\mathscr{T}_0 = \mathscr{T}.
