Algebra, VIII, p. 146, § 8. Semisimple Rings
Let be an idempotent in A.
a) If is a partition of , then the A-module is the direct sum of the family .
b) Let be a finite family of left ideals of A with direct sum . For , denote the component of in by . Then is a partition of , and we have for every .
c) The A-module is indecomposable if and only if the idempotent is indecomposable.
Let be a partition of . For every , we have
and therefore . For every , we define an A-linear projector in by setting . We have if , and for every in ,
Consequently (II, §1, No. 8, p. 20, Proposition ) is the direct sum of the images of the . Now, we have , so the image of is . This proves a).
Take the notation and assumptions of b). Let . Since belongs to , we have . Since is the direct sum of the and belongs to for every , we have and for . In other words, is a partition of the idempotent . By a), is the direct sum of the . By assumption, we have , and is the direct sum of the . We therefore have for every . We have proved b).
Finally, c) follows immediately from a) and b).
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
