Algebra, VIII, p. 436, Appendix 1. Algebras without Unit Element
Let V be an infinite-dimensional vector space over a commutative field K. Let End be the K-subalgebra of End consisting of the endomorphisms of finite rank. Let W be a linear subspace of V, and let be the set of elements of End whose kernel contains W; it is a left ideal of End. An element of End is a right unit modulo if and only if we have for every . Such an element exists, that is, is regular, if and only if W is finite-dimensional. The ideal is maximal and regular if and only if W has dimension 1.
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
