Let K be a commutative field and E a vector space over K. We denote by EndKpf(E)^{pf}_K(E) the subset of EndK(E)_K(E) consisting of the endomorphisms of which a power belongs to EndKf(E)^f_K(E). If u∈u\in EndKpf^{pf}_K (E), then we set Iu=⋂n⩾0I_u=\bigcap_{n\geqslant 0} Im unu^n and Tr u=u= Tr(u∣Iuu|I_u); this notion coincides with that defined in No. 2 for an endomorphism of finite rank. a) Let u∈u\in EndKpf(E)^{pf}_K(E); let V be a subspace of E stable under uu, and let uVu_V and uE/Vu_{E/V} be the endomorphisms of V and E/VE/V induced by uu. Prove the equality Tr u=u= Tr uV+u_V+ Tr uE/Vu_{E/V}.

b) Let U be a subspace of EndK(E)_K(E). Suppose that there exists an integer nn such that every product of nn elements of U has finite rank. Prove that the mapping Tr:U→K: U\rightarrow K is linear.

c) Let F be a vector space over K, and let u:E→Fu: E\rightarrow F and v:F→Ev: F\rightarrow E be homomorphisms such that u∘v∈u\circ v\in EndKpf(F)^{pf}_K(F). We have v∘u∈v\circ u\in EndKpf(E)^{pf}_K(E) and Tr v∘u=v\circ u= Tr u∘vu\circ v.
