Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VII, § 2. Cartan subalgebras and regular elements of a Lie algebra

Let g=sl(2,k)\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{l}(2, k). If x=(γ−α)∈gx=(\gamma -\alpha )\in \mathfrak{g}, an easy calculation gives

βγ \beta \gamma

det(T −- ad xx) =T3−4(αβ+γ2)T= T^3-4(\alpha \beta +\gamma^2)T.

If the characteristic of kk is ≠2\not= 2, then rk(g\mathfrak{g}) =1= 1 and the regular elements are those xx such that αβ+γ2≠0\alpha \beta +\gamma^2\not= 0.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
