Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VII, § 2. Cartan subalgebras and regular elements of a Lie algebra

Let V be a vector space of finite dimension nn, and g=gl(V)\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{g}\mathfrak{l}(V). Let k‾\overline{k} be an algebraic closure of kk. Let x∈gx\in \mathfrak{g}, and let λ1,...,λn\lambda_1, . . . , \lambda_n be the roots in k‾\overline{k} of the characteristic polynomial of xx (each root being written a number of times equal to its multiplicity). The canonical isomorphism from V∗⊗VV^*\otimes V to g\mathfrak{g} is compatible with the g\mathfrak{g}-module structures of these two spaces, in other words it takes 1⊗x−tx⊗11\otimes x-^tx\otimes 1 to ad xx (Chap. I, §3, no. 3, Prop. 4). In view of §1, Prop. 4 (i), it follows that the roots of the characteristic polynomial of ad xx are the λi−λj\lambda_i-\lambda_j for 1≤i≤n,1≤j≤n1\leq i\leq n,1\leq j\leq n (each root being written a number of times equal to its multiplicity). Thus, the rank of g\mathfrak{g} is nn, and xx is regular if and only if each λi\lambda_i is a simple root of the characteristic polynomial of xx.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
