Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VII, § 2. Cartan subalgebras and regular elements of a Lie algebra

Let n\mathfrak{n} be a nilpotent subalgebra of a Lie algebra g\mathfrak{g}. There exists a Cartan subalgebra of g\mathfrak{g} contained in g0(n)\mathfrak{g}^0(\mathfrak{n}).

Put a=g0(n)\mathfrak{a}=\mathfrak{g}^0(\mathfrak{n}). Then n⊂a\mathfrak{n}\subset \mathfrak{a} since n\mathfrak{n} is nilpotent. If x∈ax\in \mathfrak{a}, let P(x)P(x) be the determinant of the endomorphism of g/a\mathfrak{g}/\mathfrak{a} defined by ad xx. Denote by a′\mathfrak{a}' the set of x∈ax\in \mathfrak{a} such that P(x)≠0P(x)\not= 0, which is an open subset of a\mathfrak{a} in the Zariski topology; the relations x∈a′x\in \mathfrak{a}' and g0(x)⊂a\mathfrak{g}^0(x)\subset \mathfrak{a} are equivalent. By Prop. 7 (ii) of §1, no. 2, there exists y∈ny\in \mathfrak{n} such that g0(y)=a\mathfrak{g}^0(y) =\mathfrak{a}, and y∈a′y\in \mathfrak{a}' so a′\mathfrak{a}' is non-empty. Since a′\mathfrak{a}' is open, its intersection with the set of regular elements of a\mathfrak{a} is non-empty. Let xx be an element of this intersection. Then g0(x)⊂a\mathfrak{g}^0(x)\subset \mathfrak{a} and g0(x)\mathfrak{g}^0(x) is a Cartan subalgebra of a\mathfrak{a}, hence is nilpotent. On the other hand, Prop. 10 (i) of §1, no. 3, shows that g0(x)\mathfrak{g}^0(x) is its own normalizer in g\mathfrak{g}; it is therefore a Cartan subalgebra of g\mathfrak{g}, which completes the proof.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
