Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VII, § 5. Decomposable linear Lie algebras

Let g\mathfrak{g} be a decomposable Lie subalgebra of gl(V),x∈g,s\mathfrak{g}\mathfrak{l}(V),x\in \mathfrak{g},s and nn the semi-simple and nilpotent components of xx.

(i) The semi-simple and nilpotent components of adgx_{\mathfrak{g}}x are adgs_{\mathfrak{g}}s and adgn_{\mathfrak{g}}n, respectively.

(ii) xx is regular in g\mathfrak{g} if and only if ss is.

(iii) If g′\mathfrak{g}' is a subalgebra of gl(V)\mathfrak{g}\mathfrak{l}(V) containing g\mathfrak{g}, every elementary automorphism of g\mathfrak{g} extends to an elementary automorphism of g′\mathfrak{g}'.

Put a=gl(V)\mathfrak{a}=\mathfrak{g}\mathfrak{l}(V). By Chap. I, §5, no. 4, Lemma 2, the semi-simple and nilpotent components of adax_{\mathfrak{a}}x are adas_{\mathfrak{a}}s and adan_{\mathfrak{a}}n; assertion (i) follows from this. We deduce that the characteristic polynomials of adgx_{\mathfrak{g}}x and adgs_{\mathfrak{g}}s are the same; hence (ii). If adgx_{\mathfrak{g}}x is nilpotent, adgx=_{\mathfrak{g}}x= adgn_{\mathfrak{g}}n, so adg′n_{\mathfrak{g}'}n extends adgx_{\mathfrak{g}}x, and nn is a nilpotent element of g′\mathfrak{g}', hence (iii).

Let g\mathfrak{g} be a Lie subalgebra of gl(V)\mathfrak{g}\mathfrak{l}(V). We know (Chap. I, §6, no. 5, Th. 4) that the following conditions are equivalent:

(i) the identity representation of g\mathfrak{g} is semi-simple;

(ii) g\mathfrak{g} is reductive and every element of the centre of g\mathfrak{g} is a semi-simple endomorphism.

These conditions are actually equivalent to the following:

(iii) g\mathfrak{g} is a reductive subalgebra in gl(V)\mathfrak{g}\mathfrak{l}(V).

Indeed, (i) =⇒=\Rightarrow (iii) by Chap. I, §6, no. 5, Cor. 3 of Th. 4, and (iii) =⇒=\Rightarrow (i) by Chap. I, §6, no. 6, Cor. 1 of Prop. 7. We are going to show that if g\mathfrak{g} satisfies these conditions, g\mathfrak{g} is decomposable. More generally:

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
