Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VIII, § 1. The Lie algebra sl(2, k) and its representations

Let E be an sl(2,k)\mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{l}(2, k)-module. An element of E is said to be primitive if it is a non-zero eigenvector of HEH_E and belongs to the kernel of X+EX_{+E}.

A non-zero element ee of E is primitive if and only if keke is stable under the operation of kH+kX+kH+kX_+; this follows for example from Lemma 3.

Examples The element X+X_+ is primitive of weight 2 for the adjoint representation of sl(2,k)\mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{l}(2, k). The element (1,0)(1,0) of k2k^2 is primitive of weight 1 for the identity representation of sl(2,k)\mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{l}(2, k) on k2k^2.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
