Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VIII, § 1. The Lie algebra sl(2, k) and its representations

Let Φ\Phi be the bilinear form on V(m)V(m) such that

Φ(en(m),en′(m))=0\Phi (e^{(m)}_n, e^{(m)}_{n'}) = 0 if n+n′≠mn+n'\not=m

Φ(en(m),em−n(m))=(−1)n(m) \Phi (e^{(m)}_n, e^{(m)}_{m-n}) = (-1)^n(m)
n n

If x=au+bvx=au+bv and y=cu+dvy=cu+dv, then Φ(xm,ym)=(ad−bc)m\Phi (x^m, y^m) = (ad-bc)^m. It is now easy to check that Φ\Phi is invariant, and that Φ\Phi is symmetric for mm even, and alternating for mm odd.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
