If E is a finite dimensional s\mathfrak{s}-module, and nn an integer, denote by ana_n the dimension of the eigenspace of HEH_E relative to the eigenvalue nn. Denote by cE(T)c_E(T) the element of Z[T,T−1]\mathbf{Z}[T,T^{-1}] defined by cE(T)=∑n∈ZanTnc_E(T) =\sum_{n\in\mathbf{Z}}a_nT^n.

a) Define LmL_m as in Exerc. 5. Show that

dim Lm=am−am+2L_m=a_m-a_{m+2} for every integer m≥0m\geq 0.

Deduce that cE(T)=cE′(T)c_E(T) =c_{E'}(T) if and only if E and E′E' are isomorphic. Recover this result by using Exerc. 18e)18e) of Chap. VII, §3.

b) Show that cE⊕F=cE+cFc_{E\oplus F}=c_E+c_F and cE⊗F=cE.cFc_{E\otimes F}=c_E.c_F.

c) We have cV(m)(T)=(Tm+1−T−m−1)/(T−T−1)c_{V(m)}(T) = (T^{m+1}-T^{-m-1})/(T-T^{-1}). d) Deduce from a), b), c) that, if m≥m′≥0m\geq m'\geq 0, the s\mathfrak{s}-module V(m)⊗V(m′)V(m)\otimes V(m') is isomorphic to

V(m+m′)⊕V(m+m′−2)⊕V(m+m′−4)⊕⋯⊕V(m−m′). V(m+m')\oplus V(m+m'-2)\oplus V(m+m'-4)\oplus\cdots\oplus V(m-m').

If m≥0m\geq 0, the s\mathfrak{s}-module S2V(m)S^2V(m) is isomorphic to

V(2m)⊕V(2m−4)⊕V(2m−8)⊕⋯⊕{V(0)if m is evenV(2)if m is odd V(2m)\oplus V(2m-4)\oplus V(2m-8)\oplus\cdots\oplus \begin{cases} V(0)&\text{if $m$ is even}\\ V(2)&\text{if $m$ is odd} \end{cases}

and the s\mathfrak{s}-module Λ2V(m)\Lambda^2V(m) is isomorphic to

V(2m−2)⊕V(2m−6)⊕V(2m−10)⊕⋯⊕{V(2)if m is evenV(0)if m is odd. V(2m-2)\oplus V(2m-6)\oplus V(2m-10)\oplus\cdots\oplus \begin{cases} V(2)&\text{if $m$ is even}\\ V(0)&\text{if $m$ is odd}. \end{cases}
