Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VIII, § 4. Split semi-simple Lie algebra defined by a reduced root system

Let α∈B∪(−B)\alpha \in B\cup (-B). Then ad XαX_{\alpha} is locally nilpotent.1^1

Assume that α∈B\alpha \in B. Let g′\mathfrak{g}' be the set of z∈gz\in \mathfrak{g} such that (ad XαX_{\alpha})pz=0^pz= 0 for sufficiently large pp. Since ad XαX_{\alpha} is a derivation of g,g′\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{g}' is a subalgebra of g\mathfrak{g}. By (21), Xβ∈g′X_{\beta}\in \mathfrak{g}' for all β∈B\beta \in B. By (17), (19), (20), Hβ∈g′H_{\beta}\in \mathfrak{g}' and X−β∈g′X_{-\beta}\in \mathfrak{g}' for all β∈B\beta \in B. Hence g′=g\mathfrak{g}'=\mathfrak{g} and ad XαX_{\alpha} is locally nilpotent. Since ad X−α=θX_{-\alpha}=\theta(ad XαX_{\alpha})θ−1\theta^{-1}, we see that ad X−αX_{-\alpha} is locally nilpotent.

We shall see that g\mathfrak{g} is finite dimensional, so that ad XαX_{\alpha} is actually nilpotent.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
