Show that there exists a unique polynomial function dd on h∗\mathfrak{h}^* such that d(λ)=d(\lambda ) = dim E(λ)E(\lambda ) for all λ∈P++\lambda \in P_{++}; its degree is Card(R+_+). We have

d(wλ−ρ)=ε(w)d(λ−ρ)d(w\lambda -\rho ) =\varepsilon (w)d(\lambda -\rho ) if w∈W,λ∈h∗w\in W, \lambda \in \mathfrak{h}^*.

In particular, the function λ→d(λ−ρ)2\lambda \rightarrow d(\lambda -\rho )^2 is invariant under W. Deduce that there exists a unique element uu of the centre of U(g)U(\mathfrak{g}) such that χλ(u)=d(λ)2\chi_{\lambda}(u) =d(\lambda )^2 for all λ∈h∗\lambda \in \mathfrak{h}^* (apply Th. 2 of §8, no. 5). When g=sl(2,k)\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{l}(2, k), we have u=C+1u= C+1, where C is the element defined in Exerc. 1 of §1.
