Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VIII, § 11. Classes of nilpotent elements and sl2 -triplets

Assume that g\mathfrak{g} is semi-simple. Let xx be a non-zero nilpotent element of g\mathfrak{g}. There exist h,y∈gh, y\in \mathfrak{g} such that (x,h,y)(x, h, y) is an sl2\mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{l}_2-triplet.

Let n=\mathfrak{n}= Ker(ad xx)2^2. If z∈nz\in \mathfrak{n}, then [ad xx,[ad xx, ad z]]=z]] = ad([x,[x,z]]x,[x, z]]) =0= 0. By Lemma 5, ad x∘x\circ ad zz is nilpotent, so Tr(ad x∘x\circ ad zz) =0= 0. This shows that xx is orthogonal to n\mathfrak{n} with respect to the Killing form Φ\Phi of g\mathfrak{g}. Since

Φ\Phi((ad xx)2y,y′^2y, y') =Φ(y=\Phi (y, (ad xx)2y′)^2y')

for all y,y′∈gy, y'\in \mathfrak{g}, and since Φ\Phi is non-degenerate, the orthogonal complement of n\mathfrak{n} is the image of (ad xx)2^2. Hence there exists y′∈gy'\in \mathfrak{g} such that x=x= (ad xx)2y′^2y'. Put

h=−2[x,y′] h=-2[x, y']

we have [h,x]=2x[h, x] = 2x and h∈h\in (ad xx)(g)(\mathfrak{g}). It now suffices to apply Lemma 6.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
