Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VII, § 2. Cartan subalgebras and regular elements of a Lie algebra

Let (gi)i∈I(\mathfrak{g}_i)_{i\in I} be a finite family of Lie algebras, and let g=\mathfrak{g}= ∏i∈Igi\prod_{i\in I}\mathfrak{g}_i.

(i) An element (xi)i∈I(x_i)_{i\in I} of g\mathfrak{g} is regular in g\mathfrak{g} if and only if, for all i∈I,xii\in I,x_i is regular in gi\mathfrak{g}_i.

(ii) rk(g\mathfrak{g}) =∑i∈I=\sum_{i\in I} rk(gi\mathfrak{g}_i).

Indeed, for any x=(xi)i∈I∈gx= (x_i)_{i\in I}\in \mathfrak{g}, the characteristic polynomial of adgx_{\mathfrak{g}}x is the product of the characteristic polynomials of the adgixi_{\mathfrak{g}_i}x_i.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
