Topologie algébrique, chapter III, § 1. Homotopies, homéotopies
In other words, a contraction of X onto A is a homotopy having the following properties:
(i) for every ;
(ii) for every ;
(iii) for every and every .
For there to exist a contraction of X onto A, it is necessary and sufficient that the canonical injection of A into X be a homotopy of the pair onto the pair .
Let be a point of X. A contraction of X onto the subspace is nothing other than a homotopy pointed at joining the mapping Id to the constant mapping with image . Consequently, X contracts onto if and only if X is contractible at (Example 3 of III, p. 234).
Let X be a topological space and let A be a subset of X. Let be a contraction of X onto A. The mapping of X into A defined by is a retraction of X onto A and is a homotopy joining Id to . The relations Id and then imply that the mappings and are homotopies, inverse to one another up to homotopy.
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
