Topologie algébrique, chapter III, § 1. Homotopies, homéotopies
Let X be a topological space. One denotes by C(X), and calls the cone of the space X, the cone of the mapping Id; it is the space obtained from by contracting . Let be the canonical mapping of into C(X); the image of under is called the open cone of the space X.
Assume that X is not empty. Then the cone C(X) is not empty and its base point is again called the vertex of the cone.
The mapping of into is a homotopy joining the identity mapping of to the mapping . One deduces from this, by passing to quotient sets, a mapping such that for . The mapping is continuous by I, p. 19, prop. 10. The mapping is then a pointed homotopy at joining the identity mapping of C(X) to the constant mapping with image . Consequently, the cone C(X) is contractible to its vertex . Since is contained in , the mapping defines, by passing to subspaces, a pointed homotopy at joining the identity mapping of to the constant mapping with image ; the open cone is therefore contractible to .
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
