Topologie algébrique, chapter IV, § 2. Groupes de Poincaré des espaces délaçables

Let A be a connected topological space locally connected by arcs, let B be an unravelable topological space, and let f:A→Bf: A\rightarrow B be a continuous mapping. Let aa be a point of A and b=b= f(a)f(a). The following assertions are equivalent:

(i) The homomorphism π1(f,a):π1(A,a)→π1(B,b)\pi_1(f, a):\pi_1(A, a)\rightarrow \pi_1(B, b) is surjective.

(ii) For every pair (E,E′)(E,E') of coverings of B, the mapping

f∗:CB(E;E′)→CA(A×BE;A×BE′) f^*:\mathscr{C}_B(E; E')\rightarrow \mathscr{C}_A(A\times_BE; A\times_BE')

which associates to a B-morphism g:E→E′g: E\rightarrow E' the A-morphism

f∗(g):A×BE→A×BE′,(x,y)↦(x,g(y)) f^*(g): A\times_BE\rightarrow A\times_BE',(x, y)\mapsto (x, g(y))

is bijective.

By means of the homomorphism π1(f,a)\pi_1(f, a), every π1(B,b)\pi_1(B, b)-set is endowed with a structure of π1(A,a)\pi_1(A, a)-set. Condition (i) is then equivalent to the following condition (i′'):

(i′') For every pair (F,F′)(F,F') of π1(B,b)\pi_1(B, b)-sets, every π1(A,a)\pi_1(A, a)-morphism of F into F′F' is a π1(B,b)\pi_1(B, b)-morphism.

In fact, if the homomorphism π1(f,a)\pi_1(f, a) is surjective, every π1(A,a)\pi_1(A, a)-morphism of π1(B,b)\pi_1(B, b)-sets is a π1(B,b)\pi_1(B, b)-morphism. Conversely, let us take a π1(B,b)\pi_1(B, b)-set F reduced to a point and let F′=π1(B,b)/f∗(π1(A,a))F'=\pi_1(B, b)/f_*(\pi_1(A, a)). The mapping of F into F′F' whose image is f∗(π1(A,a))f_*(\pi_1(A, a)) is a π1(A,a)\pi_1(A, a)-morphism but is not a π1(B,b)\pi_1(B, b)-morphism if F′F' is not reduced to a point, that is to say if π1(f,a)\pi_1(f, a) is not surjective.

Since the space B is unrollable, every π1(B,b)\pi_1(B, b)-set is isomorphic to the π1(B,b)\pi_1(B, b)-set EbE_b, where E is a covering of B (IV, p. 344, remark 1). The equivalence of (i′') and (ii) therefore follows from prop. 2 of III, p. 310.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
