Topologie algébrique, chapter IV, § 2. Groupes de Poincaré des espaces délaçables

Let X be a connected Polish space which is locally connected by arcs, and let xx be a point of X. If X is not unravelable, the group π1(X,x)\pi_1(X, x) has the power of the continuum.

Let dd be a metric defining the topology of X for which it is complete. Suppose that X is not unravelable. Then there exists a point a∈Xa\in X and, for every integer n⩾0n\geqslant 0, a loop cnc_n at aa in X whose image has diameter ⩽2−n\leqslant 2^{-n} and whose class in π1(X,a)\pi_1(X, a) is nontrivial.

Let us denote by K the set {0,1}N\{0,1\}^{\mathbf{N}} and endow it with the product topology, the space {0,1}\{0,1\} being endowed with the discrete topology. For every element ε=(εn)\varepsilon = (\varepsilon_n) of K, let cεc_{\varepsilon} be the mapping of I\mathbf{I} into X defined by cε(0)=ac_{\varepsilon}(0) =a and, for 2−n−1⩽t⩽2−n,cε(t)=cn(2n+1t−1)2^{-n-1}\leqslant t\leqslant 2^{-n},c_{\varepsilon}(t) =c_n(2^{n+1}t-1) if εn=1\varepsilon_n= 1 and cε(t)=ac_{\varepsilon}(t) =a otherwise. One has cε(0)=cε(1)=ac_{\varepsilon}(0) =c_{\varepsilon}(1) =a. The mapping cεc_{\varepsilon} is continuous at every point t∈]0,1]t\in ]0,1]. It is also so at 0, since d(a,cε(t))⩽2−nd(a, c_{\varepsilon}(t))\leqslant 2^{-n} if t∈[0,2−n]t\in [0,2^{-n}]. The mapping cεc_{\varepsilon} is therefore a loop in X at aa.

If ε\varepsilon and ε′\varepsilon ' are elements of K such that (ε0,...,εn)=(ε0′,...,εn′)(\varepsilon_0, . . . , \varepsilon_n) = (\varepsilon '_0, . . . , \varepsilon '_n), then cε(t)=cε′(t)c_{\varepsilon}(t) =c_{\varepsilon'}(t) for every t∈[2−n−1,1]t\in [2^{-n-1},1] and d(cε(t),cε′(t))⩽d(c_{\varepsilon}(t), c_{\varepsilon'}(t))\leqslant d(a,cε(t))+d(a,cε′(t))⩽2−nd(a, c_{\varepsilon}(t)) +d(a, c_{\varepsilon'}(t))\leqslant 2^{-n} if t∈[0,2−n−1]t\in [0,2^{-n-1}]. It follows that the mapping ε↦cε\varepsilon \mapsto c_{\varepsilon} of K into the space Ωa(X)\Omega_a(X) is continuous, when the space Ωa(X)\Omega_a(X) is endowed with the topology of compact convergence.

Let Γ⊂K×K\Gamma \subset K\times K denote the set of pairs (ε,ε′)(\varepsilon , \varepsilon ') such that cεc_{\varepsilon} is strictly homotopic to cε′c_{\varepsilon'}. It is the graph of an equivalence relation R in K.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
