Topologie algébrique, chapter IV, § 4. Théorie de la descente

Let X and Y be topological spaces and let ff be a continuous mapping of X into Y. Suppose that the space X is locally arcwise connected, that the space Y is simply connected, and that the mapping ff is strict and surjective. Then the groupoid ϖ(Y)\varpi (Y) is generated by the image of ϖ(X)\varpi (X) under ϖ(f)\varpi (f).

We may suppose that the spaces X and Y are non-empty. Let G denote the subgroupoid of ϖ(Y)\varpi (Y) generated by the image of ϖ(X)\varpi (X) under ϖ(f)\varpi (f). Since the mapping ff is surjective, the set of vertices of G is equal to Y. By prop. 8, Coeg(ff) is a transitive groupoid. Since ϖ′(f)\varpi '(f) induces the identity on the vertices, the image of Coeg(ff) under ϖ′(f)\varpi '(f) is a transitive subgroupoid of ϖ(Y)\varpi (Y). The image of ϖ(X)\varpi (X) under γ\gamma generates Coeg(ff) (II, p. 200, corollary); since one has ϖ(f)=\varpi (f) = ϖ′(f)∘γ\varpi '(f)\circ \gamma, the groupoid G is transitive.

Let y0y_0 be a point of Y and let H denote the subgroup Gy0G_{y_0} of π1(Y,y0)\pi_1(Y, y_0). By Th. 1 of IV, p. 342, there exists a connected covering (T,p)(T, p) of Y and a point t0t_0 of the fibre Ty0T_{y_0} of which H is the stabilizer.

If xx is a point of X, the set Fly0,f(x)(G)_{y_0,f(x)}(G) is not empty, since G is transitive. For u∈u\in Fly0,f(x)(G)_{y_0,f(x)}(G), the point t0⋅ut_0\cdot u is a point of the fibre Tf(x)T_{f(x)}, independent of uu since the group H, the isotropy group of G at y0y_0, fixes t0t_0. Let us denote this point by σ(x)\sigma (x); let σ:X→T\sigma : X\rightarrow T denote the resulting mapping and s:X→X×YTs: X\rightarrow X\times_YT the mapping x↦(x,σ(x))x\mapsto (x, \sigma (x)). By construction, the mapping ss is compatible with the canonical operations of ϖ(X)\varpi (X) in X and X×YTX\times_YT. It then follows from lemma 1 of III, p. 312 that ss is continuous. The mapping σ\sigma is therefore continuous; moreover it is compatible with the equivalence relation defined by ff, for σ(x)\sigma (x) depends only on f(x)f(x). Since ff is strict and surjective, there exists a unique continuous mapping σ‾:Y→T\overline{\sigma}: Y\rightarrow T such that σ‾∘f=σ\overline{\sigma}\circ f=\sigma, so that the covering T admits a section. Since T is connected, the mapping p:T→Yp: T\rightarrow Y is a homeomorphism (I, p. 31, cor. 4 of prop. 6), and one has H=π1(Y,y0)H =\pi_1(Y, y_0), whence Gy0=π1(Y,y0)G_{y_0}=\pi_1(Y, y_0). Since G is transitive, it follows that G=ϖ(Y)G =\varpi (Y).

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
