Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 1. Spectres et caractères
Let be a rational fraction and let be an element which can be substituted in R, that is to say (A, IV, p. 20), that there exist P and such that and is invertible; one can then form the element of A; it does not depend on the choice of P and Q. One has Q(Sp()), so that every element of Sp() can be substituted in R.
One has R(Sp()) Sp(R()). For let Sp(); there exists a polynomial such that ; then, , so that is not invertible, hence Sp(R()).
Conversely, suppose that the field K is algebraically closed. Suppose first that R is not constant and let us prove that one has Sp(R()) R(Sp()). Let Sp(R()). Since R is not constant, is not the zero polynomial; let be a decomposition into factors of degree 1, so that . Since is not invertible, there exists such that is not invertible, hence Sp(), and then R(Sp()).
When R is constant, the equality Sp(R()) R(Sp()) also holds, provided that Sp() is nonempty.
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
