Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 1. Spectres et caractères

The topology induced on X(A)\mathsf{X}(A) by that of A^\widehat{A} is coarser than the topology of X(A)\mathsf{X}(A).

In fact, let T be a closed subset of A^\widehat{A}. Then T is the set of π∈A^\pi \in \widehat{A} whose kernel contains a subset M of A. Therefore T∩X(A)T\cap \mathsf{X}(A) is the set of χ∈X(A)\chi \in \mathsf{X}(A) which vanish on M, that is, a closed subset of X(A)\mathsf{X}(A). Hence the proposition.

In general, the topology of X(A)\mathsf{X}(A) does not coincide with the topology induced by the topology of A^(\widehat{A}(cf. I, p. 193, Exercise 6, c)).

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
