Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 4. Calcul fonctionnel holomorphe

Let L be a polynomially convex compact subset of Cn\mathbf{C}^n and let U be an open neighbourhood of L. For every function f∈O(U;A)f\in \mathscr{O}(U; A), there exists a sequence of polynomial functions on Cn\mathbf{C}^n with coefficients in A which converges to f∣Lf|L in C(L;A)\mathscr{C}(L; A).

One may suppose that L is not empty and that A is nonzero. Let P (resp. P0P_0) be the set of restrictions to L of polynomial functions on Cn\mathbf{C}^n with coefficients in A (resp. with coefficients in C\mathbf{C}). Let B (resp. B0B_0) be the Banach algebra closure of P (resp. of P0P_0) in C(L;A)\mathscr{C}(L; A). Let ι\iota denote the injection of A onto the normed subalgebra of B consisting of the constant functions.

Let z1,...,znz_1, . . . , z_n be the restrictions to L of the coordinate functions on Cn\mathbf{C}^n; they are elements of B0B_0, and, setting z=(z1,...,zn)\boldsymbol{z}= (z_1, . . . , z_n), one has SpB0n(z)=L^n_{B_0}(\boldsymbol{z}) = L by Proposition 15 of I, p. 47.

Let f∈O(U;A)f\in \mathscr{O}(U; A). By composition with ι\iota, the function ff defines an element fB=ι∘ff_B=\iota \circ f of O(U;B)\mathscr{O}(U; B). Since SpBn(z)⊂^n_B(\boldsymbol{z})\subset SpB0n(z)⊂U^n_{B_0}(\boldsymbol{z})\subset U, one can form the element b=Θz(fB)b= \Theta_{\boldsymbol{z}}(f_B) of B. Let w=(w1,...,wn)∈L\boldsymbol{w}= (w_1, . . . , w_n)\in L, and let φ\varphi be the continuous unital morphism g↦g(w)g\mapsto g(\boldsymbol{w}) of B into A. One has φ∘ι=\varphi \circ \iota = IdA_A, so that φ∘fB=f\varphi \circ f_B=f. Since φ(zi)=wi\varphi (z_i) =w_i, prop. 3 of I, p. 66 implies φ(Θz(fB))=Θw(φ∘fB)\varphi (\Theta_{\boldsymbol{z}}(f_B)) = \Theta_{\boldsymbol{w}}(\varphi \circ f_B). Hence

b(w)=φ(b)=φ(Θz(fB))=Θw(φ∘fB)=Θw(f)=f(w) b(\boldsymbol{w}) =\varphi (b) =\varphi (\Theta_{\boldsymbol{z}}(f_B)) = \Theta_{\boldsymbol{w}}(\varphi \circ f_B) = \Theta_{\boldsymbol{w}}(f) =f(\boldsymbol{w})

by the corollary of prop. 2 of I, p. 65. Thus one has f∣L=bf|L =b; in particular, f∣Lf|L belongs to B. This proves the proposition.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
