Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 4. Calcul fonctionnel holomorphe

Let A be a commutative unital Banach algebra. Let U1U_1 and U2U_2 be open sets of X(A)\mathsf{X}(A) forming a partition of X(A)\mathsf{X}(A). Then there exists a unique idempotent jj of A such that the Gelfand transform G(j)\mathscr{G}(j) is equal to 1 on U1U_1 and to 0 on U2U_2.

Let us identify the space X(A)\mathsf{X}(A) with a compact subset of CA\mathbf{C}^A by the mapping χ↦(χ(a))a∈A(\chi \mapsto (\chi (a))_{a\in A}(cf. No.o6^o6 of I, p. 6 and corollary of Theorem 1 of I, p. 29). The subsets U1U_1 and U2U_2 of the uniform space CA\mathbf{C}^A are compact and disjoint. By TG, II, p. 31, Proposition 4, there exists a finite subset M of A and disjoint open subsets V1V_1 and V2V_2 of CM\mathbf{C}^M such that

p(U1)⊂V1,p(U2)⊂V2 p(U_1)\subset V_1,p(U_2)\subset V_2

where pp is the canonical projection of CA\mathbf{C}^A onto CM\mathbf{C}^M.

Let a1,...,ana_1, . . . , a_n be the distinct elements of M, and identify CM\mathbf{C}^M with Cn\mathbf{C}^n. We have SpAn(a1,...,an)⊂p(X(A))⊂V1∪V2^n_A(a_1, . . . , a_n)\subset p(\mathsf{X}(A))\subset V_1\cup V_2 since U1∪U2=X(A)U_1\cup U_2=\mathsf{X}(A). Let ff be the function on V1∪V2V_1\cup V_2 equal to 1 on V1V_1 and to 0 on V2V_2. We have f∈O(V1∪V2)f\in \mathscr{O}(V_1\cup V_2). Put j=f(a1,...,an)j=f(a_1, . . . , a_n). Since f2=ff^2=f, we have j2=jj^2=j. By corollary 1 of I, p. 66, we have χ(j)=1\chi (j) = 1 if χ∈U1\chi \in U_1 and χ(j)=0\chi (j) = 0 if χ∈U2\chi \in U_2, which proves the existence of the required idempotent.

Moreover, if j1j_1 is an idempotent of A, the relations j2=jj^2=j and j12=j1j_1^2=j_1 imply (j−j1)(j+j1−1)=0(j-j_1)(j+j_1-1) = 0. If G(j1)=G(j)\mathscr{G}(j_1) =\mathscr{G}(j), the Gelfand transform of j+j1−1j+j_1-1 has its values in {−1,1}\{-1,1\}, hence j+j1−1j+j_1-1 is invertible (Proposition 6 of I, p. 37), whence j=j1j=j_1.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
