Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 4. Calcul fonctionnel holomorphe

Let A be a commutative Banach algebra without radical. In order that A admit a unit element, it is necessary and sufficient that X(A)\mathsf{X}(A) be compact.

The condition is necessary (I, p. 29, corollaire). Suppose X(A)\mathsf{X}(A) compact. Let A~\widetilde{A} be the Banach algebra deduced from A by adjunction of a unit element, and identify X′(A)\mathsf{X}'(A) with X(A~)\mathsf{X}(\widetilde{A}). The complement of X(A)\mathsf{X}(A) in X(A~)\mathsf{X}(\widetilde{A}) reduces to the character χ0\chi_0 of A~\widetilde{A} whose kernel is A. The subsets X(A)\mathsf{X}(A) and {χ0}\{\chi_0\} are open in X(A~)\mathsf{X}(\widetilde{A}). By Prop. 13, there exists an element j∈Aj\in A such that χ(j)=1\chi (j) = 1 for χ∈X(A)\chi \in \mathsf{X}(A), and χ0(j)=0\chi_0(j) = 0. Hence j∈Aj\in A.

Let then xx be in A. We have χ(jx)=χ(x)\chi (jx) =\chi (x) for every χ∈X(A)\chi \in \mathsf{X}(A), hence jx=xjx=x since A is without radical. Thus, jj is a unit element of A.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
