Theory of Sets, I, 57

Let A1A_1, A2A_2, ..., AnA_n be relations in a logical theory T\mathscr{T}.

(a) To prove the relation "A1A_1 or A2A_2 or ... or AnA_n" in T\mathscr{T}, it is enough to prove AnA_n in the theory obtained by adjoining to T\mathscr{T} the axioms not A1A_1, not A2A_2, ..., not An−1A_{n-1}.

(b) If "A1A_1 or A2A_2 or ... or AnA_n" is a theorem in T\mathscr{T}, then to prove a theorem AA in T\mathscr{T} it is sufficient to prove the theorems

A1⇒A,A2⇒A,…,An⇒A.A_1 \Rightarrow A, \qquad A_2 \Rightarrow A, \qquad \ldots, \qquad A_n \Rightarrow A.
