Theory of Sets, I, 58

Let T\mathscr{T} be a logical theory with explicit axioms A1A_1, A2A_2, ..., AnA_n. Then AnA_n is independent of the other axioms of T\mathscr{T} (§ 2, Exercise) if and only if the theory whose signs and schemes are the same as those of T\mathscr{T}, and whose explicit axioms are A1A_1, A2A_2, ..., An−1A_{n-1}, "not AnA_n", is not contradictory.
