Theory of Sets, III, 238

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

(a) Let pp and qq be two integers ⩾1\geqslant 1, let n=2p+qn = 2p + q, let E be a set with nn elements, and let N=(np)=(np+q)N = \binom{n}{p} = \binom{n}{p+q}. Let (Xi)1⩽i⩽N(X_i)_{1 \leqslant i \leqslant N} (resp. (Yi)1⩽i⩽N(Y_i)_{1 \leqslant i \leqslant N}) be the sequence of all subsets of E which have pp (resp. p+qp + q) elements arranged in a certain order. Show that there exists a bijection φ\varphi of [1,N][1, N] onto itself such that Xφ(i)⊂YiX_{\varphi(i)} \subset Y_i for all ii. (The method is analogous to that of Exercise 6 of § 4: observe that for each r⩽Nr \leqslant N the number of sets YjY_j which contain at least one of X1X_1, …\ldots, XrX_r is ⩾r\geqslant r.)

(b) Let hh, kk be two integers ⩾1\geqslant 1, let nn be an integer such that 2h+k<n2h + k < n, let E be a set with nn elements and let (Xi)1⩽i⩽r(X_i)_{1 \leqslant i \leqslant r} be a sequence of distinct subsets of E, each having hh elements. Show that there exists a sequence (Yj)1⩽j⩽r+1(Y_j)_{1 \leqslant j \leqslant r+1} of distinct subsets of E, each having h+kh + k elements, such that each YjY_j contains at least one XiX_i and each XiX_i is contained in at least one YjY_j (by induction on nn, using (a)).
