Theory of Sets, chapter III, § 7. Inverse limits and direct limits

Let (Eα,fβα)(\mathrm{E}_\alpha, f_{\beta\alpha}), (Fα,gβα)(\mathrm{F}_\alpha, g_{\beta\alpha}), (Gα,hβα)(\mathrm{G}_\alpha, h_{\beta\alpha}) be three direct systems of sets relative to I. Let E=lim→⁡Eα\mathrm{E} = \varinjlim \mathrm{E}_\alpha, F=lim→⁡Fα\mathrm{F} = \varinjlim \mathrm{F}_\alpha, G=lim→⁡Gα\mathrm{G} = \varinjlim \mathrm{G}_\alpha, and let fαf_\alpha (resp. gαg_\alpha, hαh_\alpha*) be the canonical mapping of* Eα\mathrm{E}_\alpha (resp. Fα\mathrm{F}_\alpha, Gα\mathrm{G}_\alpha*) into* E (resp. F, G*). If* (uα)(u_\alpha) and (vα)(v_\alpha) are two direct systems of mappings uα:Eα→Fαu_\alpha : \mathrm{E}_\alpha \to \mathrm{F}_\alpha, vα:Fα→Gαv_\alpha : \mathrm{F}_\alpha \to \mathrm{G}_\alpha, then the mappings vα∘uα:Eα→Gαv_\alpha \circ u_\alpha : \mathrm{E}_\alpha \to \mathrm{G}_\alpha form a direct system of mappings, and we have

(25)

lim→⁡(vα∘uα)=(lim→⁡vα)∘(lim→⁡uα).\varinjlim (v_\alpha \circ u_\alpha) = (\varinjlim v_\alpha) \circ (\varinjlim u_\alpha).

For if we put wα=vα∘uαw_\alpha = v_\alpha \circ u_\alpha, then for α⩽β\alpha \leqslant \beta we have

hβα∘wα=(hβα∘vα)∘uα=(vβ∘gβα)∘uα=vβ∘(uβ∘fβα)=wβ∘fβα,h_{\beta\alpha} \circ w_\alpha = (h_{\beta\alpha} \circ v_\alpha) \circ u_\alpha = (v_\beta \circ g_{\beta\alpha}) \circ u_\alpha = v_\beta \circ (u_\beta \circ f_{\beta\alpha}) = w_\beta \circ f_{\beta\alpha},

which shows that (wα)(w_\alpha) is a direct system of mappings. Furthermore, if u=lim→⁡uαu = \varinjlim u_\alpha and v=lim→⁡vαv = \varinjlim v_\alpha, then for all α∈I\alpha \in \mathrm{I} we have

(v∘u)∘fα=v∘(gα∘uα)=hα∘(vα∘uα),(v \circ u) \circ f_\alpha = v \circ (g_\alpha \circ u_\alpha) = h_\alpha \circ (v_\alpha \circ u_\alpha),

and by virtue of the uniqueness of the direct limit, we have v∘u=lim→⁡wαv \circ u = \varinjlim w_\alpha.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
