Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

In the definition procedure defined in Exercise 17 (b), take α0=1+1\alpha_0 = 1 + 1 (denoted by 2 by abuse of language),

w(ξ)=ξ,g(ξ,η)=ξη.w(\xi) = \xi, \qquad g(\xi, \eta) = \xi\eta.

Denote f(ξ,η)f(\xi,\eta) by ξη\xi^\eta and define α0\alpha^0 to be 1 for all ordinals α\alpha. Also define 0β0^\beta to be 0 and 1β1^\beta to be 1 for all ordinals β≥1\beta\geq 1.

(a) Show that if α>1\alpha>1 and β<β′\beta<\beta', we have αβ<αβ′\alpha^\beta<\alpha^{\beta'} and that, for each ordinal α>1\alpha>1, αξ\alpha^\xi is a normal functional symbol with respect to ξ\xi. Moreover, if 0<α≤α′0<\alpha\leq\alpha', we have αβ≤α′β\alpha^\beta\leq{\alpha'}^\beta.

(b) Show that αξ⋅αη=αξ+η\alpha^\xi\cdot\alpha^\eta=\alpha^{\xi+\eta} and (αξ)η=αξη(\alpha^\xi)^\eta=\alpha^{\xi\eta}.

(c) Show that, if α≥2\alpha\geq 2 and β≥1\beta\geq 1, αβ≥αβ\alpha^\beta\geq\alpha\beta.

(d) For each pair of ordinals β≥1\beta\geq 1 and α≥2\alpha\geq 2, there exist three ordinals ξ,γ,δ\xi,\gamma,\delta such that β=αξγ+δ\beta=\alpha^\xi\gamma+\delta, where 0<γ<α0<\gamma<\alpha and δ<αξ\delta<\alpha^\xi, and these three ordinals are uniquely determined by these conditions.
